3 Yoga Stretches to Improve Your Posture

Better Posture

Poor posture is becoming a major problem because we all spend so much time hunched over looking at our phones, sitting at a desk, and carrying little ones around.

Working on improving posture will help us stand up straighter, which not only makes us look taller and thinner (who doesn’t want that?!) but, in addition, it can alleviate some nagging pains.

So, here are three quick stretches that you can do anytime, anywhere. They are perfect if you need a break from sitting at your desk. Or, you can do them in the morning before you start your day so that you are standing a little taller.

Wheel Pose

Okay, hold on. Before you said “I could never do that,” hear me out. You might be able to do it. Or, if you aren’t ready to try, I have another option for you.

But, for the full version, start on your back, plant your hands and feet, and push up.

If you aren’t ready for this, no big deal, you can keep your shoulders down and push up with just your legs and lift your hips into Bridge Pose. Keep your weight in your shoulders, not your neck.

Repeat this pose three times and hug your shins to release your back between each time.

 

Forward Fold with Clasp

Okay, this one is a little less intimidating.

Clasp your hands behind your back and fold over, flipping your arms overhead. Take three deep breaths and on each exhale, fold a little further.

Keep a slight bend in your knees during this stretch to ease your hamstrings.

Warrior Pose with Archer Arms

I love Warrior Pose. It is powerful and compassionate all at the same time.

For this stretch, stand in a firm Warrior II (arms extended parallel to the ground) and reach your hands together behind your back. Take five breaths holding this pose and then switch sides.

If you can’t reach your hands, grab onto your shirt, or use a towel, to connect your hands as close as possible.

Stand taller

So, now that you’ve done the stretches, isn’t it so refreshing?!

These poses really can be done anytime, anywhere. They will open up your shoulders and prevent that hunchback/hunched over look.

Oh and remember, if something hurts, don’t force it!
