In a survey that I ran recently, I asked moms what was their least favorite time of day. Dozens of women responded to the survey and the majority of them said that they dreaded mornings the most.
Many of us moms feel like we are playing catch up from the time we wake up until the time we go to bed. As soon as your child wakes you up in the morning the race against the clock begins. We must get breakfast made, get the kids dressed, teeth brushed, not to mention getting yourself dressed, and get out the door.
When we are rushed everyone in the family feels stressed. Of course, you could prepare as much as you can the night before to get lunches packed and clothes set out, but what has really helped me take control of my mornings, and consequently my entire day, is implementing strategies from the book The Miracle Morning.
The Miracle Morning suggests waking up early and doing the six activities from the acronym SAVERS (Scribe, Affirmations, Visualization, Exercise, Reading, Silence/Mediation) before the rest of your household is awake. These are activities that are meant to nourish your mind, body, and soul on a daily basis. This is something that so many of us moms have stopped making a priority.
Why the morning? When you start your morning off “ahead of the game,” and with a positive mindset, your whole day will follow suit. Why not do the SAVERS at night?
Because when you start your day feeling calm, relaxed, and productive, it sets the tone for the rest of your day.
You are tired already, I totally get it. I have 3 young daughters and sleep is precious. But, if you are getting a decent night sleep (meaning: you are not in the newborn baby phase of life,) then you can totally do this. I guarantee it will transform your mornings. Not only will you be more productive, you will also find that you are calmer, more patient, and your entire day will go much more smoothly.
And, as much as I love to sleep in, especially now that it’s summer, I actually look forward to this quiet time before everyone is awake. It’s time for me. And, I am creating a positive mindset for the day.
Some days I skip my miracle morning. Some days I get up really early, and some days I get up a little later. It’s about treating yourself well, not about creating more rules and “to do’s.”
But, even if you have six minutes, you can do each of the SAVERS for one minute and you will still notice a difference in your morning and how your day unfolds. I promise.
A typical Miracle Morning for me goes like this:
