How to Build Your Personal Brand Online

A little off topic today

No, this is not my normal “Mommy Needs a Timeout” message, but if you are a mom who enjoys writing, wants more time, more money or has a great idea for an online biz this message could still be for you…

How can I do what you are doing?

This is the question that I’ve been getting on a regular basis these days, so I’ve decided to put my answer into a blog post. At this point, I have 1-2 people reaching out to me on a weekly basis asking me this exact question. It’s not that they want to do exactly what I am doing, but they want to create an online presence and a personal brand.

How I got started

People ask me quite often: How did you get started?

I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit, but I never had an awesome idea for an invention or a business. My blog and everything all just kind of fell into place.

Quick background: Two years ago I went through a difficult time in my life. My past had caught up with me and I had stopped being anything other than mom. I was exhausted, overwhelmed and wondering who I was.

Through a difficult year of counseling, reading and personal development, I began writing in a journal as an outlet. When I began to realize how many moms were going through the very same struggles that I was writing about, I decided to start sharing what I learned to help other moms. I began a website and community so that these moms know that they are not alone in their struggles.

Needless to say, over the past few months I’ve built a following and many people want to know how to start their own blog/website to get their message out there. And, I truly believe that everyone has a unique gift and has something to offer others.

The tools that I use

If you are serious about building your personal brand and want to build an online business (not just a hobby) here is what I recommend:

  • Purchase a domain using your name
  • Invest in some really great headshots and keep that picture consistent across all of your social media accounts
  • A great/inexpensive site for logo design is www.fiverr.com
  • Tons of free images for your blog posts at www.pixabay.com
  • Take those images and brand them at www.canva.com
  • Start building your email list and market to that list. I use www.madmimi.com, but there are a few options out there.
  • For scheduling calls I use www.calendly.com
  • If you find that you are regularly recommending certain products/books, than become an Amazon affiliate so you can make a commission.

So, those are the tools that I use most often.

I am not an expert on any of this, but I listen to training/podcasts almost daily, I work with a coach and I am a part of various online communities of other like-minded entrepreneurs.

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket

I also recommend that if you are looking to build an online business that you have multiple streams of incomeI have a few ways of bringing in income: speaking, a couple affiliate programs, direct sales and coaching. Plus, I am launching my very first product later this month and I am super excited!

Video marketing

I believe what got me to this point is that I also really put myself out there and I think one of the best ways to do this is through videos

Videos help people relate to you. And, people don’t want to see someone who is perfect. They want to see someone just like them. So, just be yourself. Connect with people. Ask questions. Add value. Remember: Service to many leads to greatness.

And, to be honest, I get nervous every single time I do a video. I love interacting with all of you, but getting on video can be intimidating. My best advice is to just start. It might be scary, but I think you would be surprised at the feedback.

Be passionate

I do what I do because I believe in it, I love it and I genuinely want to help other moms. We beat ourselves up, we don’t give ourselves enough credit and we don’t take time for ourselves outside of being a mom. That’s what gets me fired up.

If you are passionate about solving a problem for others, your following will come naturally. If you don’t have a passion for what you are doing, no one else will either.
